Email exchange regarding the possibility of PDC endorsing 17 May demonstration for Mumia Abu-Jamal in Toronto. 22 May 2007 -- On Thursday 17 May our comrades participated, along with many others, in a series of demonstrations in defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal timed to coincide with US Federal Appeals court hearing regarding his sentence. Well over 500 people demonstrated in Philadelphia, where the hearing took place, while 250 rallied in the San Francisco Bay Area, 100 in London and 75 in Toronto. IBT comrades played a central role in organizing both the London and Toronto united-front demonstrations which featured speakers from a wide variety of political tendencies. These demonstrations, while modest in size, are significant in that they represent the first internationally coordinated efforts in defense of Mumia in several years. They point to the necessity for reviving the kind of effective mass protests held in August 1995 that saved him from the capitalist machinery of death which is the U.S. judicial system. You can read his letter by clicking here. 8 May 1998--A controversy has emerged in the Canadian left over an incident at the 1998 International Women's Day Book Fair at Ryerson University, Toronto. There were two protests leading to the expulsion of two tables, one a Canadian Armed Forces recruiting table and, the other, a table representing the Islamic Republic of Iran. There were important reasons for choosing this format: cross-platform compatibility, ease of reading, the possibility in the future of adding hyper links in documents for cross-referencing, and preventing tampering or alteration of the documents. This is why a number of organizations on the web currently post their documents in Adobe Acrobat format, and we believe the number of groups doing so will likely increase. We're also aware that there are some, due to technical restrictions (for example, a machine slower than a 486 or with a small amount of memory), unable to access our documents.
