For United-Front Defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal!

A report of recent activities for Mumia

Supporters of the International Bolshevik Tendency participated in demonstrations in defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal on three continents on 9 November, the day his case was heard by the U.S. Federal Third Court in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. IBT comrades were present for the demonstration outside the courtroom, and joined 1,500 others at the previous evening's debate between two of Mumia's defenders (Prof. Johanna Fernandez and Michael Coard, a Philadelphia attorney) and two of his enemies (Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams and Tigre Hill). Hill has recently released a film, The Barrel of a Gun, that provides a crude apology for the frame-up of Mumia. Fernandez (and director Kouross Esmaeli) responded by producing their own film, Justice on Trial.

In Oakland, California, we took part in a lunchtime demonstration of over 150 people initiated by the Labor Action Committee to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. In London, IBT comrades attended and spoke at a rally of 200 organized by the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Defense Campaign UK. In Wellington, New Zealand, a small number of people attended a united-front demonstration initiated by the IBT. A small united-front protest in Hamburg was organized by the IBT and comrades of the Antikrisen-Bündnis Hamburg. In Toronto, an IBT-initiated united front, endorsed by over 30 organizations, held a rally of 250—the biggest event for Mumia held in Canada since 1995.
